Ever feel stuck… really really stuck. You’ve hit that wall so hard and there’s no bouncing back?
Here are a few simple nifty tricks to bust the brain barrier and get the cogs turning again and there is one thing that unites them.
…A shift in perspective.
Often we become trapped in our own thinking, what I like to call the brain barrier. What’s required to unleash our minds is the capacity to think outside of our current limitations.
It’s called brain flexibility.
Try these Neural Gymnastics.
“Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it”
/ Missy Elliot
1. Flip it and Reverse it
Take your challenge flip it and reverse it. Come up with answers to the opposite of your problem.
Let yourself play and delay judgement. The value of reverse thinking is that
- It can often highlight current mistakes and
- Open up completely different avenues to thinking.
Many of the most disruptive companies on the planet attribute their success to reverse thinking. What would a hotel company look like that has no hotels… AirBnb. What is a conference that has no planned speakers .. Unconference.
It’s a gloves off open forum for your brain to travel down unchartered corridors.
2. Change environment – get outside.
It works… it’s so so simple and it works.
I know you know… but we forget. Here is a reminder; GET OUTSIDE!
Ideas need breathing space, stillness and open air.
Let your ideas breathe.
Fresh ideas are less likely to visit in fluoro lit rooms.
3. Give Up
Ever had the experience of giving up, and then the answer arrived?
This is not a coincidence.
Actively hand the challenge to your subconscious mind. You can do this through visualisation or silently declaring your surrender. Let the problem release you and focus your mind on other things.
If the problem is not highly time sensitive, give yourself at least 24 hours. Give the answer the space it needs to arrive.
